Day and night lane closures on SR 50 in the I-75 area
News Type: Off-interstate closures due to project
County: Hernando County
Project: I-75 Widening from south of State Road 50 to Sumter County

Brooksville, FL -- One lane of SR 50 (Cortez Boulevard) may be closed from I-75 up to a half mile in each direction from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, August 1, and between 6:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday (August 20 - 24) nights.

During some of the night closures, drivers can expect traffic shifts and delays between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on SR 50 in the I-75 interchange area as traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction and both directions of traffic placed on the westbound lanes. This will result in two-way traffic on what normally is a two-lane westbound section of roadway.

In addition, all traffic entering and exiting I-75 may be limited to right turns only. This will mean drivers who normally would be making a left turn movement onto or off the ramps may have to go the opposite direction and make a U-Turn on SR 50 to go in their desired direction. Traffic congestion and delays are expected during the traffic shifts on SR 50 and on the I-75 exit ramps whenever traffic is in this temporary overnight alignment.

State Road 50 to be closed at I-75 at night during week of August 28

All ramps will be open, but no traffic will be able to cross under I-75 on SR 50. Traffic will be detoured onto the interstate to the next interchange and then back onto the interstate in the other direction to exit at SR 50 and continue in the original travel direction. Here are the specific detour directions:

EASTBOUND SR 50 DETOUR: Eastbound SR 50 traffic will be detoured onto southbound I-75 and use Exit 293 to CR 41. Drivers will turn right at the end of the ramp onto CR 41, cross over I-75, then turn left and enter northbound I-75 and use the northbound Exit 301 to SR 50.

WESTBOUND SR 50 DETOUR: Westbound SR 50 traffic will be detoured onto northbound I-75 and use Exit 309 (CR 476). Drivers will turn right at the end of the exit ramp onto CR 476, cross over I-75, then turn left and enter southbound I-75 and use the southbound Exit 301 to SR 50.

Closure Policy
We've had our engineers design the reconstruction of the interstates so as to disrupt travel of the motoring public the least possible. That's why the majority of our interstate closures are done during the late-night and early-morning hours. In most cases, you will find at least the same number of lanes open during daytime hours as were available before construction began. Though our closure hours vary from project to project, the general window for lane closures is 9:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Please go to the project areas of your choice (by clicking on the interstate shields to the left) for specific closure hours for those projects and for currently scheduled projects in those areas.

511 Travel Information
For real time traffic information, motorists can dial 511 or visit the fl511.com Web site.  We encourage you to call before you go (to avoid using the phone while driving) to find out about conditions on your planned route.

Commercial Radio Traffic Reports
Motorists should be aware that the Tampa Bay area has several traffic reporting agencies that provide local radio and television stations with traffic information. These reports are updated and broadcast frequently on most area stations, particularly during the morning and afternoon drive times. Information provided includes areas of heavy traffic volume, accidents, and closures.

Alternate Routes
If you choose to avoid traveling through our construction areas, other corridors are available as alternatives:

For Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County, these alternate routes include U.S. Highway 92, State Road 574, State Road 60, and the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. All of the roads are south of the I-4 corridor, and with the exception of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, all will take you through urbanized areas with many crossroads and intersections.

For Interstate 275 in Hillsborough County, both Florida Avenue and Nebraska Avenue (U.S. 41) run parallel to the interstate.

For Interstate 275 in Pinellas County, 4th Street, 9th Street, and U.S. 19 are major alternative roadways.

Please consult a road map to choose the route most suitable to your needs.
