I-4 / Selmon Expressway Connector (new road)
Project Description
Financial Project Number: 258415
Project Limits: from Interstate 4 to Selmon Expressway
Project Length: about 1 mile (main corridor)
Estimated Construction Cost: $400 million
Contractor: PCL/Archer Western, a Joint Venture
Start Date: March 1, 2010
Estimated Completion Date: Late 2013
About this Project
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is building a new north-south toll road, which will connect Interstate 4 with the Selmon Expressway west of 31st Street in Tampa. This elevated roadway will link these two major east-west corridors and significantly improve the movement of people and goods.
The new roadway will also provide exclusive truck lanes for direct access to the Port of Tampa and remove heavy truck traffic from local roads in Ybor City, one of only two National Historic Districts in Florida.
Other Project Benefits
Design
This unique, complex project was designed by national engineering firms. Design challenges included limiting impacts to the City of Tampa's McKay Bay Park and Palmetto Beach, a community eligible for designation as an Historic District. The new roadway also had to be designed to cross a number of urban streets, State Road 60, and CSX railroad tracks, as well as fit interchanges into Interstate 4 and the Selmon Expressway.
The project will also include a state-of-the-art toll facility with an all-electronic toll collection system that will allow for traffic to maintain highway speeds and for maintenance of toll equipment without disrupting traffic. The electronic open road tolling will be done through SunPass and Toll-by-Plate tolling. Click here for more info on all electronic tolling and Toll-by-Plate
Project Partners
The I-4 / Selmon Expressway Connector Project partners are the Florida Department of Transportation - District Seven, Florida's Turnpike Enterprise, and the Tampa-Hillsborough County Expressway Authority.
