Interstate 275 City of Tampa East-West Road Interchange Project

The City of Tampa, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Florida Department of Transportation, (FDOT) is conducting a Project Development & Environment (PD&E) Study. The Study’s purpose is to establish the conceptual location and design concepts for a proposed East-West road between I-275 and C.R. 581 (Bruce B. Downs Blvd.). The PD&E project study area is bounded by I-275 on the west, C.R. 581 on the east, the Tampa Electric Company (TECO) easement on the south, and the Hillsborough/Pasco County line on the north. The “No-Build” Alternative will be a viable alternative throughout the study process.

Study Status

The City identified and evaluated three potential corridors within the study area for the proposed East-West Road. Those corridors were presented at a Corridor Public Workshop on April 16, 2002.

Aerial maps, graphics, and a PowerPoint presentation showing the three corridors and their potential effects were on display at the Workshop as well as a corridor evaluation matrix which showed the results of the preliminary environmental effects evaluation for each of the corridors. A revised corridor evaluation matrix is included on the back of this fact sheet.

Based on the comments received from the public at the April 16, 2002 Workshop and the environmental and engineering analyses, the City selected a corridor to develop in more detail. The selected corridor, Corridor B, is in the southern part of the project study area and begins on the west with an interchange at I-275 approximately one mile north of the Livingston Avenue overpass. Corridor B then proceeds east from I-275 following a general alignment south of and parallel to the ELAPP property boundary, until it intersects with Commerce Park Boulevard , a distance of approximately 2.9 miles.

The PD&E Study is managed by the City of Tampa. It will include the evaluation of a multi-lane divided typical section for the proposed East-West road within the study area. Also, as part of the City’s PD&E Study efforts, an Interchange Justification Report (IJR) will be prepared for a new interchange on I-275 between the existing Bearss Avenue and S.R. 56 interchanges.
